PURPOSE/
OBJECTIVES
The Master of Theology degree is an academic program designed to provide the
student an opportunity for additional and advanced studies in the theological
disciplines, particularly through training and practice in the use of the methods
and tools of theological research.
TARGET
GROUP
The Master of Theology program has been designed for students who have previously
graduated from a three-year graduate program with the Master of Divinity degree
or its equivalent and who desire to further his or her preparation for a pastoral
or teaching ministry, or for doctoral studies.
AREAS
OF SPECIALIZATION/ MAJORS
The degree of Master of Theology is offered in two major fields: Biblical Studies
(Old Testament and New Testament Studies) and Theological Studies. Each student
is required to major in one of these two fields of specialization.
PROGRAM
GOALS
- To
enable the student to communicate
a thorough knowledge of the Bible,
including a synthetic understanding
of its major books.
- To
enable the student to evidence
an understanding of the historical
development of theology, a knowledge
of evangelical theology, and an
ability to support his or her theological
views and apply them to contemporary
issues.
- To
further develop the student's exegetical
skills in the Hebrew and Greek
texts of the Bible and his/her
ability to effectively communicate
biblical truth to the modern world.
- To
deepen the student's love and devotion
to Christ manifested by increasing
obedience to God, love for others,
fruit of the Spirit, and commitment
to fulfill the Great Commission.
ADMISSION
REQUIREMENTS
In addition to the general requirements for admission to IGSL, applicants for
the Master of Theology program must have:
1.
completed a Master of Divinity degree
or its equivalent in a qualified
seminary; 2. obtained a minimum cumulative
grade point average of 3.25 (on a
1-4 scale, 4.0
high) in all previous graduate theological
studies;
3. completed IGSL's core curriculum in the department of his/her specialization
and at least one advanced class in either Hebrew (OT 607 or 608) or Greek (NT
607) exegesis, or have satisfactorily covered the equivalent of that curriculum
elsewhere.
Students
lacking core curriculum classes from
previous theological studies may
be admitted into the Master of Theology
program under the provision that
before acceptance into candidacy,
they will complete those classes
at IGSL without credit toward the
Master of Theology degree.
DISTRIBUTION
REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 49 credit hours of work (excluding core M.Div. classes) is required
for the Th.M. degree including the following:

Each
student must complete at least 20
credit hours in his/her major field
of study and at least 10 credit hours
in his/her minor field of study (e.g.,
if the student’s major field
is Biblical Studies, he/she would
complete 20 credits in Old and New
Testament Studies and 10 credits
in Theological Studies). Normally,
the student may transfer a maximum
of 4 credit hours (3 semester credit
hours) from other graduate theological
institutions not already credited
toward an earlier M.A./M.Div. degree.
If the student completed a Master
of Divinity degree at IGSL, he/she
may petition the Th.M. committee
to grant him/her permission to transfer
an additional 4 credit hours (3 semester
credit hours) from another institution
of higher learning for a total of
8 credit hours (6 semester credit
hours).
